Camera Chronicles is a four-part series of self-portraits—paintings, drawings, photographs, and videos, the latter archived in an interactive website. I consider the process of making these works an act of dark sousveillance, drawing on Simone Browne’s concept of co-opting surveillance tools as tactics of resistance. Across the project, I turn to the camera to document chronic migraine, mobilizing self-documentation as a refusal of the abled gaze.
Warning: References to self-harm
Drawings and paintings: Exquisite corpse images made in collaboration with my laptop’s Apple PhotoBooth camera, formed through successive screen freezes as the application entered power-saving mode.
Selfies: Selected captures as I exercised my face during periods of pain.
Photographs: Conceptual framings of self-harm ideation using balloons filled with helium.
Videos in an interactive website: Self-recordings that include playing with Zen (my cat), crying, studying English vocabulary, dancing, and other daily activities.
